Chicago’s psychedelic country revue turns 5 years old this October. Host, and Chicago’s queer country crooner, Andrew Sa brings us on a gold-plated venture that’s worth five trips around our sun with double the typical out of town headliners, the Saskatchewan-savants Kacy & Clayton and straight from the Land of Enchantment, songwriter Esther Rose! Surprise special guests, and a cast including the ever-morphing starlette Mary Williamson and queen of the underground theater scene Alex Grelle.
Cosmic Country is a quarterly cult-hit variety show, a tripped-out homage to timeless TV country showcases like Grand Ole Opry. Starting at the Hideout before touring the city’s greatest venues, the Showcase is a defiantly colorful and campy affair with a real soft spot for real performers of class. The show invites some of the most talented voices across genres to cover country-ish songs with the house band led by Dorian Gehring (pedal steel, guitar, fiddle), and includes Spencer Tweedy (drums), Sullivan Davis (bass), and rotating members including the sibling wonders Liam Kazar and Sima Cunningham (Finom). Past comedy performers have included Megan Stalter and Sarah Sherman. The show has covered beloved country songs with Lala Lala, Divino Nino, Tasha, among others, and past headliners include Sam Evian & Hannah Cohen, Dougie Poole, Honey Harper, and Sabine McCalla.
